We invite you to read this introduction by Mark James, the compiler: "In my article entitled 'A Tale of Two Amplifiers', which appeared in the Christmas 2013 issue of The Radiophile (Issue 130), I recorded that I am a newcomer to working on vintage electrical equipment. I should also add that in my past life I was a doctor in A&E, the relevance of which will become clear later. My problem as a novice was how to acquire the knowledge in order to gain experience safely. Then I discovered the Radiophile booklet 'Rapid Radio Repair - Standard Superhets' by Chas. So much information! The problem for me was how to use it coherently. This is where my previous life comes in, for the diagnostic and repair processes are not dissimilar to those used in medicine. For some years we have been producing diagnostic and treatment flow diagrams based on the best available evidence. I therefore decided to apply the same process to superhet repair. The result is a diagram which I would like to share with Radiophile readers."
We concurred with Mark and initially planned to print the chart as a centre-spread in the magazine, but it soon became apparent that the constraints in physical size imposed by the A4 format could not possibly do it justice, so instead we are offering it as a double-sided A3 laminated chart. As the vast majority of the information and the sequencing has come from 'Standard Superhets' to which the page numbers on the chart refer, the chart should be used in conjunction with the book.
